Well Read: May-August Book Review

November 3, 2021

This quarters book review is coming to you a little late but better late than never right?! These past two months have been packed and busy and I wanted to take the time to give you all a thourough book review! This quarter has held some of my favorite books I have read this year, and overall. Have you read any of these? Comment below your book recs, need some ideas for my Christmas list!

Self Care by Leigh Stein: I rated this book 1.5/5 stars. I was honestly really disappointed in the plot as it was nothing like I expected. Maren works for Richual, a platform supporting self care. She tweets out a controversial tweet that makes her go off the grid and detox from social media. You are introduced too many characters she interacts with in her day to day life, showing how we all need a detox from time to time. The book did not capture me until very far in, and overall didn’t spark my interest and left me feeling bored.

November 9 by Colleen Hoover: This is one of the books I couldn’t put down in the batch. I rated it a 5/5 which was well deserved. Fallon meets Ben the day she is planning to move from LA to New York. They have a whirlwind night and decide to meet each other on the same day every year, November 9th. This book goes through the emotions of what these two have gone through has individuals and as a duo. I could not stop reading, being left on the edge of my sear after every turn. The way Coleen Hoover writes always captivates me and this did not disappoint!

Undercover Bromance by Lyssa Kay Adams: This is the second book in the Bromance Book Club series. I thought it was super cute and an easy read but wasn’t anything super special warranting a score of 3.5/5. The second book follows Braden Mack who we are introduced to in the first book as a member of the Bromance Book Club. In addition to Braden, we follow Liv who is the sister of the main character in the first book. We follow Liv and Braden as they work to take down a restaurant owner accused of sexual assault who has a vendetta for Liv. Through this journey the duo becomes very close and we follow along the twists and turns their relationship takes.

Such a Perfect Wife by Kate White: One of my favorite authors and mystery series so no shocker here it is a 5/5! Bailey is on the case again to solve where a missing mother could have disappeared too. This book is a classic mystery with many twists and interesting turns. If you are a mystery fan I highly suggest this series!

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid: This book is also an all time favorite now. 5/5 stars! I loved the story of Evelyn Hugo and the glitz and glam of her old Hollywood life. Monique a smaller reporter is contacted by Evelyns team that she would like her to write her life story. Monique is shocked and hesitant to why she was chosen, but takes the opportunity. Evelyn tells all the details of her life and her rising fame in Hollywood and of course her 7 husbands. We hear about her forbidden love and leaving the industry. Monique also finds out why she just might have been chosen for this assignment. Did not want to put this book down at night. It is definitely worth all the hype!

Verity by Colleen Hoover: Finally the last book that is on my all time favorite list so of course a 5/5 star rating. Another Colleen Hoover book that was constantly raved about that I had to see if it lived up to the hype and it definitely did. Lowen is a struggling author who is approached by Jeremy Crawford to finish his wife and best selling author series by Verity Crawford after she was seriously injured. Lowen goes to stay at the family home and go through notes and outlines the author had for the final books but happens across a shocking autobiography. Lowen decides to reveal the autobiography to Jeremy as their relationship grows and the twists and turns are shocking.

The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah This is not a typical book I would read as it is historical fiction but I have to say I enjoyed it coming in at 4.5/5 stars! Elsa lives in Texas with her family who views her as not marriage material. She mets Rafe and soon marries him as she becomes pregnant shocking her family and them cutting her off. Everything is great with her new family until the droughts and dust storms roll through and the family cannot continue their livelihood on the farm. Elsa makes the decision to take her children to California and fight for a better life after Rafe leaves them unannounced. The trials she goes through as a single mom on the road are heartbreaking and shows her perseverance.

Killer Hair by Ellen Byerrum The final book of the quarter! I picked this up at my parents when I finished my book and needed a new read. My mom is a reader just like me (thats where I get my passion) I chose this book off the shelf based on the cover. This book came in at 3.5/5, it was sweet and a classic take on love and a mystery. Lacey is a columnist who covers crimes of fashion topics. When her hairdresser tells her about a former stylist in her salon that was mysteriously murdered in the salon she steps in to get to the bottom of it!

After this quarter current yearly book count is at 16! I am exceeding my goal of one per month, now lets just see if I can beat last years count at 24.
