Well Read: May-August Book Review

September 4, 2020

It is time for another quarterly book review! I have thought of a fun little play on words to name this series. Well read. Get it read as in reading but red as in From Red to Toe;) I digress. This quarter towards the end I slowed down my reading a tad. Returning back to work didn’t leave me with time in my day to read except for at night, and I don’t know if I am the only one, but after I finish a good book its hard for me to jump into a brand new one immediately. I have some awesome book picks in this roundup as well as some so so books. Have you read any of these?! Would love to know your thoughts!

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty : I loved this book! I will say it was hard to get into in the beginning. There are a lot of characters you have to follow and each chapter switches back and forth between them all. The ending was SO worth it. I couldn’t put it down. If you like Real Housewives then you will love this book. Suburb mom drama with suspense. After I read the book I had to watch the HBO show, which depicted the way I envisioned the characters pretty well.

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens: This book was honestly a little bit of a different read for me. The book follows the life of Kya as she grows up and learns to fend for herself in the marsh of North Carolina. I felt all the emotions in this book. Happy, sad, worried. The one thing that is typical of books I usually pick up is there is a bit of a murder mystery. The book is chronological to the years Kya is growing up but also flashes back to background information on who the murder victim is. Overall highly recommend.

An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen: I read The Wife Between us from the same authors and could not put it down! The same goes for this one. You follow Jessica as she finds herself happening across a study, in which she receives money she desperately needs. But her worse nightmare is soon to begin. The doctor in charge of the study begins to manipulate her and leave her confusing her own truth. Will she figure out the truth and expose the doctor for what she has done? I HIGHLY recommend these books as they leave you on the edge of your seat not wanting to put the book down.

Beach Town by May Kay Andrews: Such a sweet read. This book is perfect for the beach or the pool. A set locator happens into a small town in which she gets tangled up with the locals in arguments. She has to deal with dramatic stars and directors, but finds herself fitting in and maybe falling in love with some of the locals.

Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty: Really disliked this book. Was very odd, too long, and couldn’t get into it. It follows 9 strangers who go to a retreat to help them disconnect and deal with their individual issues. From marriage, to loss, and weight, these strangers are put in some challenging predicaments which lead them to banding together to make it out of the retreat. So many odd twists and turns. Each chapter follows a different character so it can get really confusing keeping everything straight.

The Dinner List by Rebecca Serle: A decent read. Didn’t love or hate it. The concept is who would you have at your 30th birthday dinner dead or alive. Sabrina finds herself at the table with her ex, her dad, best friend, professor and Audrey Hepburn she has until midnight to talk to them all. Will see be able to get all of her questions answered before time is up?

You are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen: Another good read by these two authors. This one is my least favorite out of the three though. Shay finds herself meeting and becoming best friends with the Moore sisters but things are not adding up after the sudden loss of one of their dear friends. Definitely more depressing then the other two and honestly concerning on how people play into other agendas.

Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn: This honestly might be my favorite book of the year. Many of my friends that have read this said they had a hard time getting into the book. I did not though, not wanting to put the book down from the start. Anna is literally the woman in the window. Living alone in her home and watching the outside from within to scared to leave her apartment. She meets the new neighbor and becomes infatuated. But something seems off… and Ana is dying to figure it out.

So Pretty It Hurts by Kate White: I have read many Kate White books especially the Bailey Wiggins murder mystery series. Bailey is a reporter who just so happens to find herself in situations around and covering murders. She and her friend head to a cabin in the woods with high profile music producers, modeling agents etc. Someone dies overnight and Bailey knows this isn’t natural. You follow along her questioning all guests and looking for more clues. A classic good mystery read!

I need to add some of these to my list! Right now, I’m listening to The Fixer Upper by Mary Kay Andrews on Audible and also reading The Women in Black by Madeleine St John. I have so many books waiting to be read and you’ve inspired me to make time to read them!
