My Everyday Makeup Routine

January 24, 2019

Fun fact about me, I am highly addicted to watching beauty gurus on YouTube. I have really watched these videos for years now and have taken some tips to good use, as well as finding some amazing products along the way! Having your go to holy grail makeup products is key when figuring out your everyday makeup routine. These products are fool proof, budge proof and leave you feeling your best! I will cut certain steps out of this routine and amp some up depending on the occasion. For example, I do my full face routine but only add mascara and eyebrows for work. I always tell my boyfriend I don’t feel complete if I “forget my eyebrows” LOL. So lets jump into these ride or die products!

Eye Makeup

Some people prefer to start with their face base first. I like to start with my eyeshadow so shadow does not fallout onto my under eye, and creates a mess trying to clean up shadow when your face makeup is completely done.

  1. I start my routine with Mac Painterly Paint Pot. I use this cream eyeshadow to set my powder eyeshadow and insure that my eyeshadow pigment is bold and stays put all day. If you do not want to add this priming step, you can always substitute with your concealer. I also like the Revlon cream eyeshadow if you are looking for a more affordable option. Cream eyeshadows can also be used on a lighter makeup days when you just want a wash of color on your eyelid.
  2. Next I will go in with my favorite neutral eyeshadow palette, Tartelette In Bloom. This palette is great for beginners and perfect for an everyday eyeshadow look. I usually will add Jetsetter and Smarty Pants to my crease and add the gorgeous shimmery Funny Girl all over the lid. SECRET TIP. If you didn’t know, spraying your shimmery eyeshadows down with a setting spray, or honestly even just water, makes the pigment much more impactful and bold! You can also use your fingertips to press all over your eyelid as well. This really depends on how the eyeshadow is pressed when it is made so play with your eyeshadow formulas and see what works best! I will add Activist or Smoke Show to my outer V to smoke out a look and add more dimension. This palette also to me smells like chocolate so added bonus! I love to use Morphe brushes when applying my eyeshadow. They are so affordable and perform so well!

Face Makeup

Face makeup. For me this is really based on preference and skin texture. Some things that work for my skin might not work for yours and vice versa! It really is all about trial and error and seeing how your skin responds. I highly suggest reading reviews online, talking to your local Sephora employees and getting some samples to test out!

  1. Priming your face is key. I personally stick to just my moisturizer now. I found that primers can be heavy on my sensitive skin, and sometimes caused me breakouts. I am still playing around on what moisturizer I like best under my foundation. Currently I am using Clinique Moisture Surge for day and night use, and it is working pretty well! It is very important to prep your skin with some kind of moisture if you are dry, or if you are oily, an oil control product. Its all about finding the perfect match for your skin type.
  2. Once I am hydrated I go in with my favorite foundation! Estee Lauder Double Wear has been my holy grail for almost a year now. The makeup artist at my friends wedding used this on me and it stayed on all night! I was instantly sold. If you are a full coverage matte queen, this foundation is for you! The kicker is it does not feel heavy on your face at all. Winner in my book! I apply this with my Beauty Blender. I know it is so expensive to keep purchasing a $20 egg, but I still have not found a drug store option that I like as much. I prefer using the sponge as it helps distribute my foundation evenly, and in my opinion, makes it feel lighter and creates no streaks like a foundation brush does for me.
  3. UNDER EYE CIRCLES. My arch nemesis. I swear I have had permanent under eye circles since I was little. No matter how much sleep, water, and jade rolling I do, they never go away. I have although found the most amazing concealer that covers it all! Tarte Shape Tape. This concealer is raved about. I will say the only downside is that it can be drying. I always make sure I apply an eye cream at night after using. I love using this concealer as well for covering any blemishes that may pop up as well!
  4. Now you might consider me crazy… but I have one specific powder I use to set my under eye. This can definitely be used all over, but I prefer a different powder for that job. Setting your under eye concealer is very important to avoid creasing into your fine lines. Jaclyn Hill of course led me onto this Charolette Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Powder. It leaves my under eye so smooth and truly airbrushed! I love using my pointed Morphe powder brush with this under the eye.
  5. The powder that I set the remainder of my face is the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder. This keeps my foundation locked in and keeps oils at bay. I will say my skin does not tend to be oily, but in my T zone I will experience some oils and this helps combat that. I fluff this all over with my Too Faced Brush, any larger powder brush will do though.
  6. I have to watch the amount of bronzer I apply since I am so fair. The Too Faced Milk Chocolate bronzer has been great for my complexion! I will use this on my cheeks, forehead and jawline. This is something I definitely needed the help of a Sephora employee when picking out the perfect shade for me. You want to avoid looking muddy or orange and the tone of the bronzer you use with your skin tone can really affect that look.
  7. Blushes to me are easier to find. A lot of blush formulas in my opinion are fool proof. My favorites I will say are MAC blushes. I use an angled blush brush to dust this on the apples of my cheeks. I tend to gravitate towards more deep rosy pink or mauve colors for myself.
  8. The final and most glowing step is highlight! I personally like to be beaming like a flood light, but some prefer to have more of an inner glow look. Depends on the makeup look you are going for! I own wayyyy to may highlights but my personal favorite right now is from Pixi by Petra at Target! I apply this with a larger blender brush from Morphe. I do prefer using a fan brush with some highlights but this will depend on the formula and the color pay off with each brush. Just like eyeshadow test out each method to see what works best for you! To finish off the face I love using a stippling brush over my bronzer, blush and highlight to blend these all together and ensure I do not have any harsh lines.

Finishing Touches!

Finally you have finished your face makeup and move onto my favorite part! Adding all the finishing touches will make your look pop and bring everything together.

  1. This is definetly personal preference but I usually love finishing out my eyeshadow look with some black winged liquid liner. I will follow the line of my eyeshadow shape that I have created with my eyeshadow, to make a winged cat eye look. My liquid liner of choice is the Sephora Liquid Liner. It stays put all day and dries down to be a matte black liner. I love this one in particular because it has a brush tip applicator. I find this applicator much easier to apply than the felt tip. I will say practice makes perfect with winged eyeliner!
  2. My eyebrows have been a passion project of mine LOL. I went several years with over plucking and not having the correct shape for my face. It has been almost 2 years since I have started growing my eyebrows out and getting them threaded every 2 weeks. The up keep is worth it and does not cost more than $15 a month at the place I go to. That alone has helped my situation. I fill in my eyebrows with Anastasia Brow Wiz. I struggle with more filled out brows at the beginning of my brow so this works wonders! I will sometimes set my brows with Benefit brow gel moreso on nights or days when I have more dressy plans. My brows are not unruly without it.
  3. My favorite Mascara ever since I can really remember using any other mascara besides the pink tube green top that my mom started me out on, is the L’Oreal Telescopic in carbon black. This lengthens my lashes and really separates them! I will say this doesn’t really add thickness to my lashes so I will sometimes add another coat of whatever sample mascara I have on deck.
  4. Now it is time to lock in all of your hard work!! I love the Urban Decay all nighter setting spray. I really have seen a huge difference when using this and the prolonged wear of my makeup I gain when using this. I also like using this as a refresher when my makeup is looking a little dull or dry looking. Make sure you hold this far enough from your face so you do not get water droplets on your face.
  5. The best and final step! Lipstick isn’t everyones cup of tea but when I go without it I feel completely naked. One of my all time favorite shades is MAC Captive. I have seriously gone through 3 tubes. MAC satin finish lipsticks in general are my favorite. This color is a nice neutral color but still adds some color to my face. It also wears off beautifully not leaving a mess after eating or drinking throughout the day.

No matter how little or how much makeup you gravitate towards using everyday, find the products (or no products) that make you feel beautiful in your own skin!
