Jewelry Layering

June 5, 2019

Coco Chanel said it best when it came to accessory overkill, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take at least one thing off.” This honestly is one of the most key statements in fashion history. There IS such a thing as too much of a good thing. When it comes to layering jewelry there is a fine line between refined and gaudy. I worked at Kendra Scott for 2 years and sometimes look back at the way I layered some of my more statement pieces and cringe. Refined Refined Refined. No matter the occasion, even if you work in a jewelry store selling product, take Coco Chanels iconic tip and apply it to your styling.

Two rules I stick to when layering jewelry, Rule 1, Keep it simple. Do not try to layer several statement chunky necklaces together. When you ice a cake you keep the layers light, same concept when it comes to necklaces. You want to add an element of interest, not an element of distaste. Play with mixing metals, incorporating different charms or symbols of pieces, change up your chain lengths. Rule 2 is to nail down one statement piece. In this look I have opted for no bracelets or statement rings as the focus of my look is on the upper half. My statement piece is my earrings as they are of larger scale and make more of a statement. If I wanted to make my necklaces the focal piece, I could have opted for a stud earring. It is really all about checks in balances. Play around at home with the pieces you have and see which lengths of necklaces pair better together, that way when you are in a rush out of the door in the morning you do not have to second guess your accessories in the mirror. Coco Chanel would be proud. XOXO
